Silene latifolia, Brit. & Rendle (Cucubalus latifolius, Mill. S. Cucubalus, Wibel. S. inflata, Sm. S. venosa, Aschers. S. vulgaris, Garcke. S. Zawadskii, Hort., not Herbich). Bladder Campion. Bladder Catchfly. Cowbell. White Ben. Perennial, 1-3 ft. high, glaucescent, usually glabrous: sts. ascending: lvs. elliptical or lanceolate, acuminate, base narrowed: fls. polygamous-dioecious, numerous, white or pinkish, drooping, in corymbose cymes or panicles; calyx campanulate to subglobose, 20-nerved, glabrous, strongly inflated; petals narrow, 2-cleft: caps. ovate-globose. Eu., N. Afr., Asia, and naturalized in N. Amer. B.B. (ed. 2) 2:64.—The young shoots are said to be eaten by the poor folk of England as a substitute for asparagus; they taste something like green peas. CH
