Pelecyphora (Greek, hatchet-bearing; from an alleged resemblance in the tubercles). Cactaceae. Hatchet Cactus. Two species closely allied to Mammillaria; sometimes seen in cactus collections. Stems globular, short-cylindric or clavate, small, often cespitose: tubercles strongly compressed from the sides; areoles very long and narrow, bordered on each side by a row of about 20 very short, appressed comb- like spines: fr. naked.
