Magnolia stellata, Maxim. (M. Halleana, Hort.). Shrub or small tree, with spreading branches: lvs. elliptic or obovate to oblong-obovate, obtusely pointed, pubescent beneath when young, 2-5 in. long: fls. white, short- stalked, numerous, about 3 in. across, sweet-scented; petals narrow-oblong, 9-18, spreading and afterward reflexed: fr. with only few fertile carpels.
