Magnolia liliflora, Desrouss. (M. obovata, Willd., not Thunb. M. discolor, Vent. M. purpurea. Curt. M. denudata, Schneid., not Desrouss.). Usually large shrub, with stout branches: lvs. obovate or oval-obovate, acute or acuminate, pubescent beneath at first, 4-7 in. long: fls. large, campanulate, white inside, purple outside, scentless; petals broad, obtuse, somewhat fleshy, about 3 ½ in. long; sepals small, ovate-lanceolate, greenish yellow: fr. brownish, ovate-oblong. May, June. China, Japan. B.M. 390. Gn. 22, p. 485; 24, p. 511; 46, p. 49. F.E. 9:611; 17:528 (pl. 74). Var. gracilis, Rehd. (M. gracilis, Salisb.). Smaller shrub, with slender branches, narrower lvs. and smaller fls.. dark purple outside. Var. nigra, Rehd. (M. Soulangeana var. nigra, Nichols.). Fls. dark purple outside, pink inside (Gn. 25:276).
