Stipa tenacissima, Linn. Esparto-Grass. Culms 2-3 ft., in bunches: lvs. narrow, smooth, cylindrical, elongated: panicles contracted; awn 1-2 in., plumose below the bend. Spain and N. Afr.—The lvs. furnish fiber from which are made ropes, mats, paper, and the like. In Afr. it is called halfa or alfa. CH The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
