Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture

Lyonia mariana, D. Don. (Andromeda mariana, Linn. Pieris mariana, Benth. & Hook. Leucothoe mariana, DC.). Stagger-bush. Fig. 2947. Deciduous shrub, 2-4 ft. high, glabrous or nearly so: lvs. oval to oblong, obtuse or acute, usually cuneate at the base, entire, 1-3 in. long: fls. nodding, in axillary clusters on leafless branches of the previous year, forming 2-5-in.-long racemes; corolla cylindric-campanulate, white or pale pink, almost 1/2 in.long: caps, ovate-pyramidal. April- June. R. I. to Fla. —The foliage is said to poison lambs and calves. CH
