Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture

Limnanthes (Greek, marsh flower). Limnanthaceae. A few species of American annuals growing near the water. Low, diffuse, rather fleshy: lvs. pinnately dissected: fls. white, yellow or rosy, solitary on axillary peduncles, regular, the parts in 4's-6's; sepals valvate in the bud; glands alternating with the petals; stamens usually 10: carpels distinct or nearly so, at first fleshy, at length hard and wrinkled, indehiscent, separating from the short axis; ovule solitary. By some authors this genus is kept in Geraniaceae, but this and Floerkea are by others separated in a small family Limnanthaceae. The two genera are sometimes combined, but Floerkea is 3-merous and Limnanthes is commonly 5-merous, and there are other differences.
