Lilium catesbaei, Walt. Southern Red Lily. Bulb oblong, 1-2 in. long, 3/4 - l in. wide, composed of a few long, narrow, white scales: st. 1-2 ft. high, slender, smooth: leaves semi-erect or nearly horizontal, 1-3 in. long. 1/3 - 1/2 in. wide: flowers 1-3, 3-4 in. diam., smooth inside, of the same color as those of L. philadelphicum; anthers red. Late June, July. N. C. to Fla. and Ala. —Rather tender and capricious, and in the North best grown in pots. CH The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
