Leptospermum scoparium, Forst. Attaining 10-12 ft.: leaves ovate to linear-lanceolate or linear, mostly under 1/2 in. long. Otherwise, almost exactly as in L. flavescens. Var. juniperinum, Nichols. (L. juniperinum, Smith). A narrow- Lvd. form with pubescent pendulous branchlets. Var. bullaturn, Rehd. (L. bullatum, Hort.). leaves larger, narrow: flowers larger, about 3/4 in. broad. Var. Nichollii, Turrill. Flowers carmine: leaves purple, but green in plants grown under glass. Var. grandiflorum, Hook. flowers large, pink or nearly white. Var. Chapmannii, Dorrien Smith. leaves brownish: flowers bright rose. New Zeal. Var. Boscawenii, Bois. Flowers 1 in. across, cherry-red in bud, white with reddish center when expanded. New Zeal. One of the most desirable forms. It is said to be of relatively easy cultured, with compact habit, the branches spreading in all directions. Excellent plants for the amateur, but very slow-growing. L. scoparium is the manuka or tea-tree of New Zeal. CH
