Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture

Greigia (Major-General Greig, Russian horticulturist). Bromeliaceae. A few species of large Andine, terrestrial or rock-loving herbs, allied to Cryptanthus, from which it differs in its simple rather than panicled infl. Fls. perfect; sepals free or lightly joined at the base, linear or ovate-lanceolate or almost subulate; perianth with free elliptical segms. rounded at apex; stamens shorter than petals or scarcely exceeding them; petals rose-color or white suffused with rose, becoming brownish. G. sphacelata, Regel (Billbergia sphacelata, R. & S. Bromelia sphacelata, Ruiz & Pav.). Stout pineapple-like plant, 3 ft., with strong spiny-margined spreading or recurving lvs.: fls. rose-color, in dense heads in the axils of the lvs., the outer bracts spiny and very acute. Summer.
