Ackermania is a genus in the orchid family (Orchidaceae), classified in the subfamily Epidendroideae, tribe Maxillarieae, subtribe Zygopetalinae. This newly created genus, in alliance with Chondrorhyncha, is named after James Ackerman, an American orchid taxonomist.

Habitat

These species are usually found in montane forests of South America, especially shady, foggy and moist ones.

Species

There are 5 known species in this genus:

  • Ackermania caudata (also Chondrorhyncha caudata and Stenia caudata): found in Peru (Cordillera del Cóndor), Colombia and Ecuador.
  • Ackermania cornuta
  • Ackermania hajekii: this new species has been recently discovered in Peru. Plant epiphyte, it grows in wet tropical forest, at an altitude of around 3600 feet. Flowers during June and July (synonym : Benzingia hajekii (D.E.Benn. & Christenson) Dressler in Lankesteriana 5(2): 93. 2005 2005)
  • Ackermania jarae: recently discovered in Huánuco, Peru, this new species is a threatened one (synonym : Benzingia jarae (D.E.Benn. & Christenson) Dressler in Lankesteriana 5(2): 93. 2005 )
  • Ackermania palorae (also Stenia palorae) (synonym : Benzingia palorae (Dodson & Hirtz) Dressler in Lankesteriana 5(2): 93. 2005 )
