Plant usually densely or silky pale gray, the numerous sts. and branches lying very close on the ground: lvs. 1 in. or less long, the lfts. 3-6 pairs, very broad, finely serrate: fls. in small sessile heads; spines or bristles 4, yellow and hairy or barbed, the fruiting calyx broader than long. New. Zeal. CH
