Pinus radiata, Don (P. insignis, Douglas. P. montereyensis, Hort.). Monterey Pine. Fig. 2965. Tree, to 80 or 100 ft., with stout spreading branches forming an irregular open, round-topped head: bark thick, furrowed: branchlets brown: buds ovate, bright chestnut- brown: lvs. acute, bright green, 4-6 in. long: cones short-stalked, conic-ovate, upper scales with elevated, rounded, almost hemispherical and obscurely keeled apex; umbo small, with minute straight or recurved prickle, lower scales with almost flattened apex; seed black, 1/4 in. long.
