Lupinus hirsutus, Linn. Blue Lupine. St. hairy, 2-3 ft. high, branching toward the top: lfts. 7-9, oblong or oblong-oval, hairy, long-petioled: fls. somewhat verticillate or scattered, large, mostly purple, sometimes variegated with blue or violet: pod large, very hairy. July, Aug. S. Eu.—Used ornamentally and as an economic plant for the same purposes as L. luteus. It is valuable for fodder and for plowing under. Var. albus, Hort., has white fls. Var. ruber, Hort., and var. foliis roseis are advertised.
